In House Designer
Many businesses would prefer an in house designer but don’t want to commit to the overheads involved. This can be a lack of understanding on how the position could work and the set up costs. They could also require an in house designer for a specific project and do not need a designer fully employed. As a freelance designer, I often go into businesses and become their in house designer.
Project by Project Basis
Many of the companies I have worked for require a designer for a set period of time while they develop a specific project. It can be a great help to have the designer on site to brainstorm problems and speed up the communication between all the stakeholders.
Equipment and software subscription costs are costly. As a freelance graphic designer I bring my own equipment to projects and use my own Adobe Creative Cloud subscription. With knowledge of many companies systems I can use your own timesheets, production lists or CRM software.
Creative Thinking
As a business develops a project, they will often find it very valuable to have a creative person as part of the project. Aside from the design required, an in house designer will often prove an invaluable member of the team able to bring a new refreshing take on the project.
Evaluation
As a freelance designer I have helped establish if the position of an in house design is sustainable. I have reported directly to the board to outline how the position could be used within the company and how it could provide added value to the marketing team. Looking at what external services the business employ, such as social media, exhibition design etc can often illustrate how the position of in house designer would be funded. I have also helped the business recruit the right person for the position holding interviews and designing test projects to help show the designers skills.
