Graphic Design Tutor
Over the years I have helped a few graphic designers develop their skills and helped as a graphic design tutor. This has been as a private tutor as well as mentoring junior designers working within agencies or as in house designers.
I have often been asked to come on board for a few weeks/months as agencies look to employ a new designer. This is to help with the work load, but also to stay on and nurture the new designer as they become familiar with their post. This takes the pressure off both the agency and the designer.
Working with in house designers can be interesting as they are often fall under the remit of a sales department. As a design mentor I have helped them develop their positions within these departments giving them confidence to explore different ideas. Encouraging an in house designer to communicate effectively to their colleagues can help the designer gain some creative space and the creative process can been seen as an advantage to the department, not just some ‘arty’ ideas to be dismissed.
Private graphic design students and graduates have also used me to help expand their experience and skills. This has been as a one to one tutor teaching design techniques through to providing detailed briefs for college projects. With my contacts I have managed to supply real projects for students to work on in giving them invaluable real world exposure. This has given them the skills and portfolio required to go a find position as a graphic designer.
