  • Screen UI Design

A good user experience is crucial in public spaces and this is screen UI design project aimed to make the process of renewing, borrowing and returning library books as clear and as simple as possible.

Good UI Design in environments such as libraries enables the user to complete tasks themselves reducing the strain on staff and other resources. The visitors need to be able to operate the system with confidence and understand the different processes, or they will create more work for the library employees.

    Screen UI Design Concepts

    Screen UI Design Case Study

The library screen UI design is being user tested with the intention of rollout within the next 12 months. Reports from user groups have helped inform colour and layout choices to make sure the UI design is optimised from day one of launch.

Simple icons pictorially demonstrate the process as as well as text and colour schemes which account for many different learning styles. The system is designed to allow for multiple language choices and provide a large print option.

Using touchscreens, the system can be linked to payment providers giving the operator the tools to purchase other services or pay late fees. Once linked to other libraries, the system will also allow users to reserve books at different locations.

If you have a public or internal system that you feel isn’t performing and causing confusion to users, then get in touch as see how a freelance graphic designer could help transform your old system without huge redevelopment costs. It is often the way that an existing system can be optimised just be changing the UI without touching the main functionality.

We can work with basic sketches to establish the main framework and then work those ideas up into visuals in order to consult with all the stakeholders. All this can be done independently to the live system ensuring once development starts, most questions have already been answered. I can then work with the system tech teams to build a working demo and often then accompany any testing teams to view how the users interact with the system. Any bugs or possiblke changes to the efficiency of the design can be made on site.

  • Easton Farm Park Logo

Easton Farm Park have refreshed their logo in order to strengthen their visual identity and give the brand a new fun look. Easton Farm Park have been welcoming visitors now for over 50 years and are one of the most important visitor attractions in Suffolk.

    Old Logo Design

    Main Refreshed logo

    Easton Farm Park Logo Refresh

    Simple Refreshed logo

The new logo design is a simplified version of their original logo, dating back to the 1980s. We chose to just use the text from the logo in order to give it a simple, uncluttered, look which is clearer when used on adverts and social media.  We also chose to remove the existing red oval which didn’t offer a friendly, inviting feel to the brand.

    Logo design examples

Examples of the main simplified logo

    New Brand Colour

Once the decision had been made to drop the red oval, it was a great opportunity to look at a more appropriate and considered brand colour. With Easton Farm Park’s extensive work in conservation, we thought this should be reflected in the colour and the obvious choice was that of the cornflower, an increasingly rare plant only found in the arable fields in Suffolk and Surrey.  The colour of the cornflower is a magnificent and quite unique blue, ideal for the Farm Park. We developed a colour palette based around the blue, its a green for contrast and a darker blue to be used when appropriate.

    Main logo design

Examples of the main logo and the new brand colour

A part of the original logo was the Suffolk Punch character.  As part of the international breeding programme, the Suffolk Punch has been very important to Easton Farm Park for over 50 years with the farm helping to keep this magnificent breed alive.  (Did you know, there are more rhinos in the world than Suffolk Punches?)

When used on the Farm Park marketing material, the simplified version of the logo works well as it is supported by the farm characters.

Social Media posts showing examples of the new bespoke Easton Farm Park typeface and how this can bring all marketing elements together

    Easton Farm Park Logo Typeface

Along with the logo, a unique typeface has been generated from the characters used within the logo.  This will enable all future marketing material to have some consistency, irrespective of the style used.  With so many activities and events happening at the Farm park, it is a great way to bring all the elements together.

If have a log that you feel could do with a refresh but really don’t want to do a complete redesign, then get in touch and I can send over some ideas of how we can use the existing elements, but make them work for a new generation.

  • Suffolk Magazine Design

This Suffolk magazine design project is on behalf of the The Suffolk Preservation Society. They produce a bi-annual magazine to highlight their campaigns and communicate how we can help maintain the beauty and distinctive character of the Suffolk landscape and it’s historic buildings.

    Suffolk Magazine DEsign

As part of their membership, all supporters receive a magazine, available in both printed and digital form. The magazine covers planning news, the work of the individual county campaigners as well as a huge variety of articles covering historical information and detailed developments impacting Suffolk.

Examples below show the different types of articles that have been part of the magazine over the last 4 years since the initial magazine design work.

    Suffolk View Spring 25

Suffolk Magazine Design Autumn 24 publication

    Suffolk View Spring 24

The Suffolk magazine design included a fluid three column layout and a colour pallet based around the three brand shades of green. In order to add more colour to the designs, spreads used full colour images where possible and background shades drawn from the main image colours.

Space was included on the right hand page for any accreditation or information about the images and graphs. This allows the layout to be more like a magazine, rather than a stuffy newsletter.

    Suffolk View Autumn 23

Each publication was included on their website in digital form, including links to all relevant resources mentioned in the articles. The interactive PDF also included page links and an interactive contents section on the cover.

The back issues are all available and prove to be a wealth of information and a living document on how the SPS are fighting any unnecessary changes to Suffolk as the county faces increased pressure from energy producers and developers.

  • Retail Brochure Design

This retail brochure design project was produced to help help communicate product ranges to customers and highlight new lines. Rather than just a simple, and boring, listing catalogue, we designed this retail brochure to be engaging and different. Using POP-art as a theme gave us the exciting colour palette to mirror the ‘bang’ and ‘crash’ nature of the product lines and present the customers with something they will value and remember.

    Retail Brochure Design

The retail brochure design still had to communicate all the vital information that accompanies such products, such as the NEC carton quantities, carton sizes as well as the basic information such as RRP and trade prices. In order to do this, a simple chart was included on each page which displayed the information on a consistent and clear manner.

    Retail Brochure Design

The images are a combination of hand-drawn vector files and Ai generated images converted into vector illustrations. Using Ai allowed us to keep costs down as we didn’t have to rely on costly image libraries. The result is all material is the property of the client who is now able to use them across other marketing material, such as adverts and Point of Sale.

    Retail smokes brochure

The retail brochure had a full print run and was sent to customers. It is was also made available as a digital download with links added to help customers navigate to the trade sales website. Each page had a simple logo section that allows the user to navigate to and from the contents page.

Feedback has been great and the brochure has achieved what we set out to do, be a bright, loud, instantly recognisable and most importantly, communicate the fun nature of the brand and the products.

The full brochure can be requested from Trafalgar Group Trading. If you have any questions as to the deign process, or feel your brand needs an injection of fun, then get in touch and we can chat about your retail brochure design.

  • Diwali Fireworks

This was a packaging design project introducing a new Diwali fireworks selection box for retailers such as garden centres, small to medium shops and supermarkets. It uses a bright outer box which contains many smaller boxes which hold the individual fireworks.

Diwali celebrations have become an important chance for retailers to offer products that help good defeat evil. Important products are the sweets shared and the gifts that are exchanged. Crucial to the celebrations are Diwali Fireworks that help light triumph over darkness.

    Diwali Fireworks

Unlike the Indoor Fireworks box, there was no inner card holding the boxes in place, so each box had to be carefully constructed so they held each other in place to help keep the products stable during transportation.

Produced in China, the Diwali Firework pack is a unique product, so no cutter guides previously existed. All inner products and sizes were tested using mockups and test prints prior to going into full production. There was a fair amount of experimentation involved before the final layout was agreed upon, giving the box it’s integral stability and making it as small as possible to reduce shipping costs.

Each inner product was designed to have it’s own colour to add to the vibrancy of the product and the Diwali celebrations. The use of the mandala patterns and shapes allows some continuity between the items, but still allow a certain amount of individuality.

    Diwali Fireworks

Diwali Firework Selection Packs can be bought from Trafalgar Group Trading. Here you can purchase a wide variety of pyrotechnic products which are ideal for small retailers as they don’t require a firework sales licence. A few other Trafalgar Group Trading packaging design products can be found in this retail packaging design case study >

If you are looking to develop a unique packaging design project and need help with mockups to test the viability, please get in touch.

    Retail Packaging Design Projects

If you have a packaging design that you need help with, let me know. I have extensive experience in managing projects with UK based and international packing companies, ensuring the final products match your expectations. Packing design projects will often involve some kind of problem solving exercise, from building a net and cutter guide from scratch or non-standard printing techniques, so you will need a designer who understands these challenges and would be a positive addition to the project.

Case study for a charcuterie label design project including salami, pancetta and other cured meats. Dirty Dog Dorest cure their own meats from the HQ and supply many national and local restaurants. Using their own recipes and rubs, they have built a sold reputation for great charcuterie.

Dirty Dog Dorest also run their own mobile pizza restaurants where their customers can have their charcuterie on fabulous homemade pizzas. With the logo being designed to dynamically change colour to reflect the product, the colour of the product is the dominant colour and overpowered by any brand colours. Using the colour on the rear of the label as part of the ingredients/statutory information allows for more of the colour to be displayed, no matter how the products site, especially important given a lot of these products are cylindrical.

  • Annual Report Project

The design and production of an annual report project and vision document for a nationally important visitor attraction and conservation champion.

ZSEA – The Zoological Society of East Anglia are a conservation organisation committed to the preservation of many endangered spectacular species, including rhino, lions, cheetah as well as a huge amount of less known, but equally important species such as the native crayfish and turtle dove.

ZSEA run two of the region’s leading visitor attractions, Banham Zoo and Africa Alive. Here they are part of international breeding programmes and provide a valuable insight into the plight of the worlds most fragile ecosystems.

In order to communicate their status, challenges and successes to the ZSEA trustees and wider public, they produced an annual report project and vision document. This highlighted where the business was at the time, especially important having only just survived the Covid crisis, and also where the organisation was heading, in the context of the massive global challenges and new legislation due to impact how a zoo should operate in the future.

    annual report project

    Annual Report Project

The document had to take a lot of very dry and complex figures and present them in such a way that they were easily understood. The use of colour and straight forward typography allowed the summary of the financial status to be simple and structured in away to make comparisons easy to digest.

As well as acting as an annual report, the document was also to be used as a vision document setting out how ZSEA intended to meet the challenges of how a zoo could help global conservation efforts, customer engagement and work towards a sustainable future.

Using photographs from the magnificent animals from Banham Zoo and Africa Alive really helped give these creatures a voice and help remind the reader excatlly what was at stake and why ZSEA are so important.

If you have a similar annual report design project that you need help designing, please get in touch. Wether you just need a freelance designer to help bring your message to life and make your facts and figures interesting and engaging, or you need someone in a wider, project management role, then I’m happy to fit into your organisation however you see fit. Having produced may annual reports, I know how to get all stakeholders on board making sure you meet you miolestones and you are able to produce a document you’re proud of.

  • Christmas Retail Campaign

Christmas is an important part of any retail operation and forms a vital part of overall annual sales. It is therefore vital to maximise this opportunity as many other campaigns throughout the year depend on the financial success of the holiday period. A well planned and executed Christmas retail campaign could make or break your year ahead.

Banham Zoo use this time to promote a Santa experience to generate extra revenue, plus engage with the increased visitor numbers and promote their important conservation activities.

The event included a Santa’s grotto, which incorporated a lot of the educational and conservation messages important to ZSEA. The visitors were invited to participate with craft activities and make a bird feeder to help the local bird population over Christmas. This important campaign was designed to show visitors that conservation is just as important in their own back gardens as the work ZSEA undertake. The local bird population is struggling and anything that the visitors could learn, the better chance they have. BBC article on the declining wild birds in British gardens >>

Christmas Retail Campaign social media activity

Social media posts showing the Santa image with birds. The challenge was then how to bring these elements across al aspects of the event, from signage, adverts and promotional material.

    Christmas wayfinder design

Wayfinders and promotional posters using the Santa image or using the background moon/colours. This allowed the zoo to clearly identify which areas had been repurposed for the Christmas experience.

Christmas Retail Campaign for food outlets

Alongside the main attractions, the Christmas retail campaign included some food outlets being used for seasonal offers such as snacks and hot chocolates. A separate style was rolled out for some kiosks to given them their own identity.

    Retail examples

Examples of retail activity. TV screen which is positioned behind the main ticket area, POS example upselling Christmas toys and a series of baubles which were presented on a real tree within the main retail area allowing visitors to buy experience gifts for Christmas.

  • Suffolk View Magazine

Suffolk View Magazine is the publication of the Suffolk Preservation Society. The charity work to sustain the beauty and distinctive character of Suffolk. Based in Lavenham, the SPS are dedicated campaigners scrutinising planning and development policy. They ensure new development is sustainable, proportionate, well designed and respectful to Suffolk’s vernacular. If you want to read more about the SPS click here >

    Suffolk View Magazine

Suffolk View Magazine has been an important way to communicate to the SPS membership. However, as with many organisations, the SPS needed to review their spending after the COVID crisis. An extensive survey proved the magazine was valued by the membership and was a vital campaigning tool. A subsequent reflection of the magazine and its contents highlighted how the magazine could be improved. Now was in ideal time to make changes. SPS approached me to format and design a new Suffolk View.

As a Suffolk based business this was a great opportunity. We discussed the structure of the magazine and the SPS had a clear idea of the new contents. I produced a number of designs to help the SPS make an informed decision. We experimented with different colours and styles. We used these designed to canvas members of the SPS to determine the direction of the magazine design. It also proves to be an important part of the design process as it provides ‘buy-in’ from the stakeholders.

The design uses a three column grid with an additional area to provide space to caption each image correctly. The cover includes thumbnails to provide a hint as to the content. Inside, the magazine is separated into sections, each with their own design within the main structure. Additional touches help to give the design a professional feel, such as the pin-line which represents time, with the markers pointing to images and headlines reflect those points in the counties history.

    Suffolk Magazine Designs
Initial designs for Suffolk View exploring different layouts and styles.

As well as the printed magazine, Suffolk View is available as a download from the website. Rather than just a simple PDF, this download as had additional functionality added to allow readers to navigate the PDF by clicking links. All the advertisers have links to their websites providing added value and helping them increase leads.

You can download a digital copy of the magazine design from the Suffolk Preservation Society here >

It is always a worry to make changes to a well loved membership institution. The new Suffolk View however we have had ‘exclusively positive’ feedback from the editorial team.

  • Shop Signage Design and Printing

    Shop Signage Design

Trafalgar Fireworks are a firework retail shop in Norwich. As well as designing their logo and brand I also helped with their shop signage design. Using their blue and red colour scheme, we designed the shop to be loud and instantly recognisable. They have a roadside ‘pub style’ sign for which we designed a simplified version of their logo. We also designed a sub-mark based on Lord Nelson’s Breast Star of the Order of Bath to highlight that the shop is open all year round. There was also an area to the left of the car park which is ideal for seasonal promotion banners.

Shop Signage Design for Trafalgar Fireworks

With such bright and colourful products, it was important to keep the internal signs simple and easy to understand. Clear white wayfinders allow the customer to easily navigate the store and find the products they need.  TV monitors around the store provide demos of products. I supplied edited videos of all the demos which have an animated logo and onscreen information. Accompanying the products are informational panels which provide additional product detail as well as technical information. These were designed and supplied to Trafalgar Fireworks as editable PDFs. The PDF allows the store to print their own labels. This keeps costs down and provides them the flexibility to change information when required.

    Shop Signs Examples

As part of a brand design project for Frosts, we completed work on their restaurants and cafes. These garden centres are a popular destination for food as well as their retail offers. For the main restaurant, we designed simple, easy to read menu boards and table menus.

    restaurant signs

As well as the main restaurant, we also designed an identity for a smaller Flower Market Cafe. The design uses a chrysanthemum theme synonymous with Frosts. This graphic style gives the Flower Cafe its own identity while still looking like a Frosts food offer.  Flower designs are also used on table wear and packaging. As this is a smaller boutique cafe, we also provided an editable menu template. Using Word, the cafe can now produce their own menus in house.

    cafe sign designs

New to the Frosts food offer is the Market Kitchen. This new cafe and deli replaces an old food hall and offers an exciting menu alternative to the main restaurant. Designed along the theme of “buy what you eat and eat what you buy”, the cafe provided menus based on the deli ingredients available. The logo reflects the deli feel and allows the bright colours of the food to dominate.

  • Video for Social Media

Video for social media is a great way to engage with your audience.

    Social Media Campaign Videos

For example, this end of season video for a Suffolk farm park was designed to thank the visitors and staff. It provides a positive message which their online audience respond to. This was a great way to show images of the animals as well as the staff behind the scenes. It also gives the farm the opportunity to highlight all the positive feedback they had received over the summer. Designed is a 1080 x 1080 pixel format, the video can be used on Facebook as well as Instagram. Very well received, the video helped the farm engage with over 250 of their followers and had over 1000 views.

    Corporate Video Production

For example, the video below for Liability and General promotes their work in the construction sector. This is an areas they specialise in and wanted to promote. The video uses an animation of their logo to help bring the brand to life. For more on the logo design project, click here.

As well as video for social media, this extend format allows for use in exhibitions and in email campaigns.  It is also embedded onto their website. This gives the company a way to focus attention and adds another dimension to their brand.

Using the same images as their other marketing material, the video is designed to fit within their overall brand. The simplest option is to produce a bland video based on a template, but this video is  uniquely L&G. It incorporates stock footage to add movement and animated sequences to highlight the offer.  We also opted for a professional voice over artist to give the video to keep the viewers attention and ensure the message was clearly understood.

    Video for Social Media Storyboard

The design process started with the storyboard above. This gave us the opportunity to formulate the style and content of the video. I then drafted a script which was tweaked by the client before commissioning the voice over. The need for flexibility was also built into the process.  The edit is designed to allow L&G to swap out the centre of the video. This gives them the opportunity to develop additional productions. These will target different sectors within their insurance business.

If you think your business could benefit from a targeted corporate video, or need help bringing your video for social media to life, then get in touch. The process is simple and can provide an excellent return.

  • Product Brochure Design for Trafalgar Group Trading

Trafalgar Group Trading have a new product brochure design for their 2020/21 range. The 28 page brochure is designed for the trade sector. It contains images of all products along with a specification table. The product specification table provides trade and retail prices, plus all additional information, such as packaging and dimensions. We also show the trade customers the NEC value of each pack and the firework category allowing them to store and sell the products safely.

    Product Brochure Design

The design of the brochure is bright and colourful, reflecting the nature of the products. These are exciting dynamic products so the backgrounds are designed to provide a sense of fun and movement. For the cover spreads we wanted something that touched on the retro nature of the product range. We took our inspiration from the 1960’s and pop and mod culture.

    Eco Sparkle Stick Brochure Spread

The product brochure design includes the launch of their new exciting Eco Sparkle Sticks. These are eco sparklers which do not contain wire. Instead they use wood so the sparkle sticks burns down to nothing. More details on the packaging design can be found here. In order to help promote the new sparkle stick products, we included a dedicated spread within the brochure. This flower design is then used on additional promotion material such as their e-newsletter designs.

    Product Brochure Design Example

Many of the new products are in production in China and not expected into the UK until September. In order to include them in the brochure we had to provide 3D image visualisation mock ups. Using a combination of Photoshop and 3D visualisation software we can produce a realistic image very close to a photograph of the actual item. As well as the products, we also visualised the CDUs (Counter Display Units) to give the trade customers and idea of how they will merchandise the range.

    Product Brochure Icon Design

To make the brochure quick and easy to understand we developed a series of icons which would identify the product characteristics. The pyrotechnic range is quite technical and some of this information will be vital to the trade customers. The icons allow then to see what is important and reduce the amount of copy in the product specification tables.

If you have a product brochure design project and would like to see other examples or have any queries about this project, please get in touch.

  • Sign Designs for Zoo Opening with Social Distancing

The last few months has seen Crooks Design producing various graphic and sign designs for the opening of two Suffolk zoos. Banham Zoo and Africa Alive are part if the Zoological Society of East Anglia. These much loved institutions found themselves in huge difficulties being forced to shutdown during what would be their busiest time of the year. I helped out with their ‘Be Amazing’ campaign as they raised funds in order to keep operating during lockdown. More information on their fundraising campaign can be found here.

    Zoo opening entrance signs
Entrance to Banham Zoo showing social distancing signage and wayfinders.

As they moved to open, they need additional support to help redesign the zoos for a new visitor experience. The project has involved site walkthroughs in order to establish what was required to make the visitors and staff safe. We also needed to communicate changes to the zoo layout and food ordering processes. In total all we produced over 200 new sign designs. These ranged from simple social distancing measures to large menu boards and information stations.  As the ZSEA marketing team were on furlough, they also needed to get help from a freelance graphic designer to send various items to print that were already in production. These included large entrance signage and restaurant designs.

One of the most fundamental changes was to covert the seated dining area to a takeout operation. This involved a communicating a clear customer journey through the restaurant. Designing signs that offered clear instructions has helped limit the queuing time. Easy to digest menu boards make ordering food quick and easy and new ordering point sign designs identify how the diners can exit the restaurant quickly and safely.

    Sign designs for zoo opening
Examples of A Board sign designs and wayfinders. The A Boards allow the zoo to move the signs depending on visitor numbers and guidance.

To help with reducing wait times for food, we also produced new takeaway food outlets. These utilised buildings that would otherwise be used for school visits. The new food outlets needed their own brand identity and logo designs. This would also help visitors navigate around the park and identify with the food offers. The food outlet designs also needed to be ready to adapt to the ever changing situation. In order to achieve this, I designed a system where the main branding was on a permanent Foamex sign. The menu boards were then over-fixed using industrial velcro. This will allow us to change the food offers on a regular basis. The food offers can change depending on tastes, availability and allow the zoo to offer a more seasonal appropriate menu. For example, a cafe that offers hot dogs in the summer can now offer hot chocolates in winter with minimal cost in producing new sign designs. Check out this news article more information about the cafe logo designs.

    Food ordering signs
Menu board and food collection point signs. We transformed the existing restaurants to takeaway operations.

The key to the majority of the signs was to introduce flexibility. The ability for the zoos to alter the signage will allow them to adapt to changing advice. Early customer feedback forms highlighted that the visitors felt safe and we wanted to build on this. Sign designs can be costly if we have to change them on a regular basis so this had to part of the design consideration from the beginning. Using A Boards which can be moved were deployed at various locations throughout the zoos. Observing visitor flow and responding accordingly made maximum use of this signage. We also made use of the existing infrastructure. Previously the zoo had signs promoting events and photo boards which are currently no available. We utilised these boards to promote the new food offers and as wayfinders. As the structures remain in place, we can quickly return these to their previous use once restrictions allow.

New food outlet signage and social distance sign designs for Africa Alive

We also developed a reference system for each sign. Printing the reference on the sign provides the management team a way to quickly brief in a  new sign as and when required. The sign printer also has a copy of each reference so they understand the size and material. The zoo installation team then use this reference to know exactly which sign needs to change.

The zoos are now fully open and the visitor feedback has been very positive. The zoos have been using the A Boards to manage the queues and people feel safe. This has lead to positive reviews which has increased visitor numbers.  The food outlets are also working well. This has helped increase visitor spend.

  • Camping Logo Design for Suffolk Farm Campsite

A new camping logo design for Easton Farm Park in Suffolk. This brand new 70 pitch campsite is next to farm and boasts a brand new toilet block and amazing onsite staff. Ideal for families looking to escape to Suffolk, the campsite needed its own identity. This was to enable the campsite to attract all campers, not just those wanting to visit the farm. I designed their logo and all the supporting material.

    Campsite Logo Design

The camping logo design needed to compliment the main logo. In order to retain some familiarity, we used the shape and the main text element from the main logo. This was combined with a handwritten font to give the logo design a rustic ‘outdoor’ feel. Silhouetted figures of children are added to emphasise the family nature of the campsite. As we will be using the logo as a single colour object on the signage and visitor material, it was important the logo function in black and white.

    Camping logo design examples

Examples of the camping logo design in action. 1) This shows a vehicle pass for campers to show which vehicles are allowed on site. The vehicle pass has a reminder on the vehicle rules on the reverse. 2) An order form for campfires and BBQ items. 3) A site map handout showing all the pitches and water points. 4) A local map highlighting important visitor information such as the nearest doctors, vets and supermarkets. The support elements are designed to be as simple as possible so as to not overload the visitor with too much information.

As well as all the printed material, we also produced various social media and website graphics.

With many great reviews on their Facebook page, it looks like campsite is a huge success. If you have a logo design project then get in touch. We can discuss what the steps should be and I can help make your business a success.

  • BBQ logo design for Suffolk Drive in Smokehouse

The Smokehouse Barbecue is a new drive-in restaurant in Suffolk.  The Smokehouse offer smoked meats and gourmet burgers. They’ve travelled throughout the US and have developed their own recipes based on the those experiences. We opted for a traditional BBQ logo design style to clearly identify the style of food on offer. This also helps imply the authenticity of the food. These traditional stamp/label designs are typical of the US South West.

    Smokehouse Brand Design Elements
Logo design for the new Smokehouse Drive In Diner. Supplied as a vector file for the Smokehouse to use on internal and external signage.

We used a red colour scheme to give the design some ‘heat’ and added some roughing of the lines to add texture and imply the logo has been branded.

    Smokehouse logo design mockups
Brand design elements showing the logo on a white background, business card designs and vehicle graphic designs

We also introduced a bulls head to the top of the logo.  This gives us an extra element that we can use in isolation when we need an additional detail. One issue with using such a traditional logo design is that is can look like other examples. The bulls head and the Suffolk Barns banner help give the logo individuality. The Suffolk Barns banner is also added to the base of the BBQ logo design to show their location and to help interested customers searching for them online.

    Smokehouse menu and clothing designs
Menu design for print and social media and staff uniform design. Also shown is the new T Shirt design to help promote the brand.

The stamp logo design is designed to work in mono. This gives it great versatility when looking to design items such as clothing. The popularity of these designs will enable the Smokehouse to produce apparel to sell and help increase awareness. As demonstrated above this mono BBQ logo design is good to use on textures and patterns. In this case we have added it to some smoking coals on the front of the menu. This really helps emphasise the flavour and style of the cooking.

Please check out my logo designs page for more examples. If you have any questions, or have a similar design project, please get in touch.

  • Brand Design for Rugby Sports Academies

Brand design for PSA Academies are UK, French and Irish high performance rugby academies. With globally recognised management and coaches including French rugby legend Philippe Saint-André, they provide the next generation of rugby players a unique and transformative experience enabling them to take their skills to a whole new level. In order to help communicate their forward thinking vision, they to totally rethink their visual brand.

    PSA Rugby Brand Identity Design

    PSA Logo Brand Identity Design

We designed a new logo and supporting brand identity. The new logo is designed to be representative of their core rugby business and be easily identified as a leading sports brand. As it was to be used on clothing and other apparel, the logo design needed to as effective reversed out of a single colour as when seen with the corporate colours.

    PSA Clothing and Kit Bag

The visual identity design extended into their offline support material such as documentation and training packs, as well as marketing material such as posters and leaflets. The visual identity was designed to give PSA Academies a dynamic, strong feel. Where possible we wanted to reduce the amount of images used on the material and just have the audience concentrate on a single hero image. The use of the striking diagonal shape was partly to help with the energetic design, but also to provide the hero image the most amount of real estate whilst still retaining the white space.

  • Fundraising Event Design – The Big Rugby Run

As a graphic designer it is good to be part of fundraising event design projects. We often get caught up in everyday issues, so to break away from and produce graphic design for good causes is beneficial for everyone. I was fortunate to be involved in the Big Rugby Run. This was a wonderful initiative from PSA Academies. This event invited rugby teams in Ireland to run a virtual relay and raise money for Feed the Heroes. Feed the Heroes provides essential meals to the frontline medical staff fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 5 weeks, the Big Rugby Run managed to get 115 teams registered and hundreds of rugby players involved. To date, the fundraising event has raised a staggering €30,000.

    High Profile Partners

As part of the event, the Big Rugby Run team attracted some big named partners. StatSports, McDonalds, The Curragh Racecourse and the Aviva Stadium all donated prizes. The prizes were used for a draw to provide an extra incentive to the rugby clubs. The draw also offered an opportunity for many other organisations, including PSA Academies to get their name in front of the clubs and their players.

Fundraising Event Pack and Logo Design

The first task was to design a simple logo. The Big Rugby Run logo uses a clear sans serif font with some added texture to imply movement. As this is aimed at a rugby audience, the typography puts emphasis on the BIG and Run to put the task beyond doubt. The rugby ball provides a little touch to help soften the overall impact. We added the hashtag below the logo as a way to bring the content together across all platforms.

The design style used a textured background as a visual tool to bring all the elements together. This too helped to provide movement in the design. We used real rugby players from the PSA Academies, giving them a simple monotone feel. Utilising a limited colour pallet helped focus attention on the content and not overwhelm the reader. It also helps imply a disposability to the design as this is a one-off event. It also allows us the opportunity to in the future to change the colour scheme to help differentiate the event from year to year.

    Fundraising Pack Design

    Social Media Support

In order to promote the event in such a short timescale, they relied heavily on social media. In order to give confidence to those considering participating we made sure all social media elements reflected the design style. Using the background as a template, the Big Rugby Run team were able to produce their own social media graphics on the fly, but keep them consistent with the main elements.

    Fundraising Event Design Icons

In order help the visual communication of the fundraising event design, we designed some simple icons. These were used as a way to highlight the process and break up the explanatory text. Icons such as these are a great way to distill important information helping the overall communication.

  • Sparkler packaging designs for Trafalgar Fireworks

Sparkler packaging designs for Trafalgar Group Trading. These packs needed to look as part of a family of products, but retain their own individuality. The range of sparklers include traditional Bonfire Night versions, coloured party sparklers and wedding sparklers.  This makes them an all year round product which many smaller retailers are now stocking. With the design available, this has encouraged retailers to stock the entire range and not just limit sales to October and November.

    Sparkler Packaging Design

Examples of the Monster Golden Sparklers, the traditional Bonfire Night sparkler. The Monster Wedding Sparklers with a suitable Wedding style pack and the Neon coloured version with a bright colourful party pack.

The new low impact sparkler made with a wooden stick and not a wire.

    Sparkler Packaging CDU design

Examples of the smaller sparkling packaging design. These are 100mm indoor sparklers designed for things like cakes and desserts and the 150mm sparkler packs designed for celebration evenings such as birthdays and weddings.

As these sparkler packaging designs are produced and printed in China it was important the artwork be ready to go with minimal input from the printer. The main elements such as the product title were all outlined to ensure there were no problems with the fonts.  The warning labels used a common typeface to enable the Chinese factory to add or amend CE numbers. As the lead times in producing and shipping the products is large, we needed to account for any legislatorial changes. The warning labels also all have to adhere to regulatory standards. This means they appear with a minimum point size and have accompanying warning diagrams.

The CDUs (Counter Display Units) were produced from cutter guides provided by the Chinese supplier. To make sure everyone understood the design, 3D models were produced prior to the printing. This overcame any language issues and acted as a clear instruction on how we expected the final product to look.

I have other examples of packaging design. If you have a packing design project and need a freelance graphic designer to help design or artwork your products, then please get in touch.

  • Zoological Society of East Anglia ‘Be Amazing’ Campaign

The Zoological Society of East Anglia runs both Banham Zoo and Africa Alive. As part of a major fundraising drive following the COVID-19 lockdown, the ZSEA approached me to help with their ‘Be Amazing’ campaign. This campaign was designed to bring donors, ticket holders and fundraisers together to maximise their support.

As part of the campaign, supporters were encouraged to raise money for the zoo and ‘Be Amazing’. The funds would be used for the welfare and food for the animals while the zoos were closed to the public.

We used Givergy as the fundraising platform. This allowed ZSEA to run both donation pages and a competition pages. The competitions were all administered by the Givergy system giving the ZSEA the knowledge these were all covered by UK gambling laws and the winners chosen at random. For my part, I helped provide engaging graphics to support the competitions. These included some amazing people, such as people singing songs, ballet schools and local businesses donating prizes.

Zoological Society of East Anglia 'Be Amazing' Campaign
Support graphics for the Zoological Society of East Anglia Givergy fundraising site

With so many organisations fundraising during this time it was important to the Zoological Society of East Anglia to look as engaging as possible. In order to achieve this, and to help with the overall delivery of the items we split each project into two options.  The first was general support for those fundraising on the zoo’s behalf. For these we used a framework based around the ‘Be Amazing’ message.  For more complex projects, we designed an individual treatment to reflect the target audience.

One example of the bespoke project design was the material targeting the schools in the local area. While in lockdown, pupils were invited to draw an ‘Amazing’ picture. Using the frames provided, the pictures would be entered into a prize draw to win a trip to the zoo for their whole class. We also printed the winning picture onto T-Shirts for the entire class. Not only does this help to raise funds, it also provides a great good news story to promote with the winning class. To support the campaign, we produced social media graphics and a downloadable entry pack.

  • Poster Designs for the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts

Examples of some poster designs completed for the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts in Suffolk. I regularly help out the Centre with new promotions and event material. As part of that relationship I also provide some marketing support and advice.

Poster designs for Peter Buck, Luke Haines, Mark Thomas and the John Peel Centre

Current posters include some exciting gigs including Peter Buck (REM) and Luke Haines (The Auteurs) promoting their collaboration Beat Poetry for Survivalists and Ian McNabb from the Icicle Works. There are also poster designs for legendary comedian Mark Thomas and cult folk songwriter Beans on Toast.

Poster designs for the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts

We also designed posters for an event which included four local bands, Pink Lemonade, Bag of Cans, Killatrix and For the Hornets. One of the reasons I get involved in these projects is they can throw up and interesting challenge.  In this case, it was how to design a poster which promotes all the acts equally, and without eluding to a specific musical genre. We also wanted to use elements of the poster to promote each band separately. In order to achieve this, the poster is designed into four quarters, giving each band equal weighting. Simple, ambitious imagery and texture gives the background an interesting style. Using this style, we then produced a series of social media graphics to target the individual band’s fans and extend the centre’s overall reach.

    Tailored social media graphics

As well as supporting the Centre promote their events, we also designed a new ‘Centre Champions’ campaign designed at recruiting volunteers from the villages and towns in Suffolk.  With their help, the posters and social media graphics will be promoted in these areas for raise the profile of the centre. The Centre Champions campaign was given its own visual style to help engage new volunteers and promote the scheme with a sense of professionalism. Giving these sort of campaigns their own visual style also allows the centre to have some differentiation between their messages. Having communication from the Centre that all looks the same will result in certain messages being lost, so using this tactical approach enables us to target the audience more effectively.

All poster designs are able to be rolled out quickly over various social media sizes. This keeps my commitment to manageable level and allows the centre to get the information out as swiftly as possible. It also provides the artists with material they can post and promote.

  • Legastat Brand Development

Legastat brand development project for a London based legal services provider.

Corporate Identity Design for Law and Litigation services

The project was to totally redesign their logo and corporate identity.  The old identity had not been refreshed since the 1960s and didn’t reflect their new digital services.  Legastat are well known and well regarded within the legal professional and are considered one of the countries leading litigation support companies. They have an iconic building in the heart of Chancery Lane and Lincoln’s Inn Fields which everybody within the legal sector is aware of.  The danger was, people might confuse ‘iconic’ with out-of-date so we began a process of exploring their logo and their visual identity. We felt it was important to experiment with a few ideas, each moving further away from the existing brand identity. This enabled us to discover what was crucial about how Legastat currently present themselves and what elements need to be retained.

The new Legastat brand development moves the business into a new digital age.  The supporting symbol combines the fundamental historical basis of their business, reprographics, with a new twist suggesting new technology based services such as digital archiving. The overarching proposition is demonstrate Legastat specialise in all aspect of legal documentation.

    Linkedin and Twitter Designs
LinkedIn and Twitter Page designs for UK Legal eDisclosure business. This shows how to bring brand consistency across all platforms

As green is such a dominant colour in the history and understanding of the business we have chosen to launch the new identity using  similar, but richer green.  Once established, this strong colour will be supported by a varied colour pallet to enable Legastat to use more variety in their promotional material.

A bold substantial font carries a sense of authority.  The most important aspect of the identity is the name and clients positive relation to it. Their clients know Legastat and need to be able to identify them quickly and easily.  The bold font also allows us to add colour to the letterforms adding an interesting new dimension. We also added the descriptor line ‘Expert Litigation Support‘ to help communicate the service to new business.

  • Christmas Campaign Design for UK Garden Centres

This Christmas campaign design is part of an on going brand development project with Frosts Garden Centres. For more detail of the main brand design, click here >

Everyone Love Christmas at Frosts was developed alongside the Frosts marketing and design team. They wanted a beautiful design they could use various elements from throughout their garden centres. They designed a campaign based around 5 unique animal illustrations, a fox, a robin, a deer, a squirrel and a mouse.

Christmas campaign design for UK garden centres

Starting with the initial sketches, we designed each character to be used individually and part of a set. This included their use with a Christmas background made up of holly, stars, hearts and mistletoe. Using this background we designed a set of Christmas baubles to accompany the tagline ‘Everyone loves…’.  I then produced each character as a lino cut. This gave them a sense of individuality and added to their personality. Once they were printed, the characters were scanned in and redrawn in order to make them vector graphics. This gave us the option to use them and a much larger scale.

    Frosts Christmas campaign design animals

Christmas lino cut examples for campaign

The Christmas campaign design was then rolled out over 2500 separate items of Point of Sale and Information graphics. With 4 different locations and hundreds of items in this was quite the undertaking. Using the Christmas characters and the Christmas pattern we designed POS specifically for each of the 4 locations helping them transform the centres into winter wonderlands.

Christmas Tree plinth Point of Sale visuals

Christmas Tree Light Display Point of Sale

Working closely with the in-house marketing team we also need to develop ways of communicating the choices of certain items to the customer. This included how they were to make an informed decision on which tree, the lights and the decorations. This involved working alongside the build and installation teams in order to ensure the large graphics were produced to the correct specifications. The Light Your Tree Point of Sale shown above has a main graphic printed on the back wall with working lights in separate boards next to a working tree. In order to complete the look, each tree also has baubles showing which light is on display and a branded plinth for the tree to be displayed on.

    Christmas leaflet designs

The design was also used on a series of adverts and supporting leaflets. In order to make the brand fit with the Christmas feel, we changed the brand green to a strong dark red and complimentary gold. Where possible we chose to print the gold as a 5th colour metallic special giving the leaflets a luxury Christmas look.

The pattern made up of the animals and other Christmas motifs was an excellent way to brand Christmas products such as voucher cards, hampers and gifts. This was a great way to ensure all products had the Frosts Christmas design irrespective of supplier and county of origin. We either supplied finished artwork or supplied the pattern to the supplier to produce their own packaging.

    Christmas Product Design

There are many ways of transforming a brand for specific campaigns, be it Christmas, Easter or commercial activity such as Black Friday. If you would like to discuss ideas on how we can convert your brand to fit a campaign, please contact me and I’m sure I can help.

  • Software Development Company based in Suffolk Brand Identity Design

Maly IT are a software development company based in Suffolk. They develop tailored software building bespoke solutions specialising on high end workflow management and quality assurance.  This has enabled them to establish themselves as a leading provider to business sectors that require bespoke software capable of handing their regulatory and compliance needs.

Malt IT Website design and T Shirt design

As a software development company Maly IT find themselves in a sector saturated with solution providers. These companies will often find themselves being quite abstract in how they present themselves as they are often offering solutions which have to tangible, visual representation. In order to help Maly IT stand out from the crowd, we developed a bold dynamic design. The logo is strong and simple highlighting the efficiency of their software, with a nod to the coding aspect implying their ability to build tailored software which is not just ‘out-of-the-box’.

The shapes which contain the logo appears in different forms across all marketing material helping to emphasise the bespoke offering. The use of this ever changing form helps give the design a distinctive feel and lessen the need to show sector specific imagery. This give Maly IT the ability to tailor their marketing as they do their software to maximise the impact to prospective clients.

    Maly IT Corporate Literature

The choice of colours pallet is designed to be a sympathetic to the regulatory sectors in pharmaceuticals, education, health and energy. The use of the dark and light shades allows the logo to be as effective in solid colour as is on a white background. These colours now form the basis for additions to the marketing material such as clothing and a new describer presentation as seen on their homepage.

If you are a software development company or similar business that needs to stand out then, drop me an email and we can discuss this projects and others and I’m sure I can offer a similar simple, but dynamic solution.
